Part 1 - Note Structure, Hierarchy, General Sound - There is a LOT to talk about with this chord/sound, but it can be a bit off putting in the beginning as it is an innately dissonant sound, and is not that "popular". It is however widely used in many situations, just not in the way you may think!
Part 2 - How I Practice New Sounds - A look at the real time process of my approach to learning a new sound.
Part 3A - Pretend Chord #1 | Over Minor 6- By far the most useful way to approach the sound of the 7 chord, or minor 7 b5, is finding ways to use the sound as a pretend chord. This allows you to find many common places to use this otherwise rare sound, and it sounds freakin awesome. In this first pretend chord, we talk about using it over a minor 6 chord, or the sound of the 2 chord.
Part 3B - Pretend Chord #2 | Over Dom 7 - We talk about using it over a standard Dominant 7 chord, or the sound of the 5 chord. We also go talk about using this idea over an extremely common style of tune, the Ambiguous Funk Vamp. I like to describe this sound as being in the Key of "Whatever", as it is vague enough to do nearly whatever you want. Perfect for Pretend Chords!
Part 3C - Pretend Chord #3 | Over Spicy 3 - Just like the previous lessons, we go over some more ways to use the sound of The 7 Chord in more common musical situations. Today that situation is the Spicy 3, which is a great template to experiment with this min7 b5 sound.
Part 3D - Pretend Chord #3 | Over Minor 4 - We go over using Minor 7 b5 over the classic transition chord known as the Minor 4. A very dramatic and personal favorite of mine, this technique will once again allow you to use the somewhat rare sound of the 7 chord over a much more common chord.
Part 4 - Circle Progressions - A very common progression that has been used for 100's of years that not only uses the 7 chord, but also uses every chord in the key in a very particular order.
Part 5 - The Maj/Min 2-5-1 - Branching off of the Circle Progression from the previous lesson, we discuss a small chunk of that progression that is widely used in all styles. It is also a mandatory sound and idea if you want to understand jazz at any level, and the most common way you will hear a 7 chord in the wild.
Part 6 - Song Examples - As usual here are a bunch of songs that feature the sound of the 7 chord, Minor 7 b5. A few of the songs use the sound in the standard way, but most of them are actually using (or give us the ability to use) the Min7b5 as a pretend chord.
Part 7 - Writing with Min7b5 - I wrote a short tune featuring the sound of The 7 Chord, Minor 7 b5. I'll play it and then we'll talk about what I'm doing and how I'm using the sound. Hope you enjoy it.
