This is the hub for all of my guitar instructional material, and is basically a summary of how I think about music and the way it relates to guitar. While there are many great things to talk about, the focus of everything in this instructional program can be summarized into what I consider to be mandatory topics needed to reach your highest potential as a musician:
-Knowing the notes under your fingers at all times
-Knowing how those notes are interacting with the chords in the music
-Knowing the chords in the key, and how to incorporate chords out of the key
-Being able to recognize these sounds by ear
-Being able to recreate these sounds, anywhere on the guitar
There are many guitar players, good and bad, who cannot put their fingers down on a random fret and say that note out loud. I bet those same people cannot say out loud how that note is functioning over every chord, like how a C is the root of a C chord, but also the 5th of a F chord, and the 7th of a Dbmaj7 chord, and the b7 of a D minor, b6 of an E minor, etc. I can also absolutely bet that many of those people will read that last sentence and think:
"That is just nerdy music theory gibberish, and isn't important. All I need to do is learn my scales in the 5 positions, feel the music, and I'm good to go right? I don't need to learn evverrryyy sinnnggglllee note! 7th's? flat 3rds? What is this, math class!? It's just way to much stuff to think about, and it won't make me better!"
If your goal is to autopilot the same minor pentatonic licks over a 12 bar blues for the rest of your life, then perhaps you are correct. However if you want to do literally anything else, you are SO WRONG.
How do I know this? Because I'm living it right now. I have played/written/performed/produced in every genre. I have dissected thousands of songs for countless students in every genre, and the key abilities that allow me to do this are above in bold. And most importantly, I have taught dozens upon dozens of people who fit this unfortunate but very common description:
They are good guitar players who have hit a wall and they don't know how to progress. They hear all of these fancy sounds but have no idea how to achieve them with the scales/chords that they know. They want to improvise or write songs, but it just seems like guess work. They are constantly looking for people to show them cool licks/chords/riffs/things instead of creating those things themselves. And NONE of them can do those things listed above in bold.
This is the unfortunate reality of the way guitar is taught and has been taught for decades. A focus on quick tricks, finger patterns, generic chord shapes, box patterns, all written down in tab so you don't have to struggle to learn by ear (God forbid!). All things that make it easier for the beginner, but massively handicap the experienced. I don't know when this lazy style of teaching came to be, but it is a plague amongst the guitar community and I'm here to put a stop to it with the 200+ videos you can find here in LoG's Guitar Extravaganza!
The content of this Patreon can be split into categories:
My complete guide on how to visualize the fretboard. It is not the CAGED system, it is not the 5 box patterns, it is not the 7 mode scales. It is an intuitive approach that focuses on giving you small puzzle pieces that you can combine in a seemingly infinite way, with a focus on constantly having different fingerings. This will allow you to navigate the fretboard in any direction you want without ever being trapped in a position.
My complete guide on how keys work, the chords that live inside of them, and how to solo, write melodies, or just generally use them in music. We will focus on truly understanding the unique qualities of each chord (also know as "modes") and how they sonically impact the music you are hearing or writing, and we do this by analyzing dozens of songs of every genre.
My complete guide to building any chord you want from scratch. With a big focus on small modifiable chord shapes, we start with chords on the top three strings and then slowly add more over time. Knowing the basic shapes and then every other note around you, will allow you to endlessly modify the chord to give you whatever sounds you want. We also dive heavily into using these small chord shapes as guides for our leads and improvising, which is essentially the only way I play these days.
These series will include lessons, practice material, ear training, backing tracks, song analysis videos, guides on how to be creative, technical approaches, and anything else I find valuable.
As a Patron you will also have access to a private Discord server where you can ask me questions, post videos of you working on things, analyze songs with me and other patrons, and hang out on camera in the practice room!
I'm positive you will find all of this material useful in some way, and I look forward to working with you!
